What to Expect Before and After Endodontic Surgery
If you have an upcoming root canal appointment, chances are you’re feeling a blend of nerves and apprehension. It will be great to finally put the procedure in the past, but you’re not sure what to expect, either. The best way to feel ready for a root canal is to know exactly what you should do before and after the procedure. Preparation always makes for a smoother experience!
Before Your Endodontic Appointment: You can still continue your normal medications, even for blood pressure, thyroid, and diabetes. Better yet, you do not need to fast! You can even eat a light breakfast or lunch. Just don’t chow down on a huge filet minion before entering the endodontist’s office! You will most likely be given local anesthesia during your root canal therapy, but you will still be able to drive and return to work afterward.
After Your Endodontic Appointment: Congratulations, you’re all done! Be sure to schedule your follow up appointment to receive your permanent restoration, which will protect your tooth against decay and cracking. It’s vital to have this appointment within 30 days of your root canal; a longer span of time puts you at risk of losing the tooth entirely. Within the first hour after your root canal, you will need to bite down on gauze packs. Use great care near the site of the surgery, and definitely do not smoke or rinse vigorously!
You’re Home…Now What? Tooth and gum tenderness is very normal after a root canal and will continue for a few days. If the pain becomes too bothersome, try Advil or Tylenol for relief. Healthy foods, water, and keeping your mouth clean will help limit nausea and speed up the healing process. Avoid chewing on the side of your root canal and drinking alcohol until your permanent restoration is in place, and be sure to make regular brushing and flossing a top priority. Within three days you should notice steady improvement, less bleeding, and less pain.
